Reasons to wear head protection in the water…
We understand that wearing a helmet surfing is a fairly new concept. Water can be deceiving in the way it presents itself a ‘soft landing’ which has meant surfers are reluctant to accept that head protection is still required. This is similar to how ski and snowboarding helmets were once ‘not required’ for the same reason but unfortunately it requires nasty accidents before helmets become a essential part of the kit.
Hitting the water with force is one thing however there are many reasons why a surf helmet is beneficial to your kit, but here are some of the main ones…
1. Equipment injuries.
On good days the beaches become packed, and with more people comes more boards, kayaks, kites and fins. We are all taught the rules and how to look after one another in the water but this doesn’t mean that accidents don’t happen. Rogue boards and kayaks on the loose can cause serious damage to anyone they may hit in the water, not the mention the sharp fins that line the bottom.
2. Visibility
On those days when the surf in particularly rough it is important to stay visible. Unfortunately, with most modern-day wetsuits this is difficult as the colour pallet is mainly restricted to black/navy. Having a brightly coloured surf helmet can be lifesaver in a rescue situation. Our inflatable liner also keeps the head buoyant to keep the helmet visible.
3. Accessories
Need a different angle for your GoPro? Use a grip insert and stick it to you helmet! The Grip insert or pad can be used for GoPro, flashlights if you’re into your night surfing, and if you are braving the giants these can also be used to fit emergency breathing apparatus.
4. warmth
Yes, neoprene hoods are good and retain the warmth around your head but that is all they do. A helmet is going to provide that same warmth whilst giving you the added protection, especially in the winter swells. With the Gecko Surf helmet, the inflatable liner means that a hood can fit underneath the helmet for double the warmth, and have it still fit you the rest of the year when the hood is no longer required.
